Howrah: The family members of a patient on Tuesday vandalized a private hospital in Howrah after the death of the 36-year-old man who was undergoing treatment for multiple injuries sustained in an accident.
Suraj Sharma, the deceased, had sustained serious injuries in an accident near Tikiapara on Friday night. He was admitted to ILS Hospital, Howrah, for treatment. Doctors said his injuries included a fracture of the femur bone. Sharma underwent an emergency surgery. Though his condition was stable after the surgery, it started deteriorating from Monday night.
His family alleged that after depositing the treatment cost, the hospital told them that Sharma had died due to cardiac arrest. Alleging wrong treatment, the family members started protesting and vandalising the hospital. When police arrived, the protesters pelted stones at them and put up a road blockade.
"Police have brought the situation under control. Three have been detained," said Bishop Sarkar, Howrah DC-North. The hospital refuted the allegations of medical negligence. "The patient was doing well after the surgery, but his condition deteriorated later. Our doctors were preparing for another surgical intervention, but the patient died before the procedure," said Mahua Goldar, COO of the hospital.
