12 Kolkata: To commemorate the 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said, "The fundamentals of our Constitution ensure liberty, equality, justice, fraternity, democracy, and secularism. We abide by these values, and I congratulate all my countrymen for upholding these values."
In the Bengal assembly, Speaker Biman Banerjee raised the issue of ‘threat culture' pursued by central investigative agencies against the opposition-governed states while moving the resolution commemorating Constitution Day. "The idea of collaborative federalism and religious tolerance, as conceptualised by our forebearers, should be strictly enforced, and governance should be according to the needs of the common people and not based on religious fanaticism," said the Speaker.
Leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the resolution document appeared to be a party leaflet of Trinamool Congress, and not something coming from the position of the Speaker. Speaking in the assembly on Tuesday, Adhikari said, "Numerous events are held in districts using public funds, yet MPs and MLAs from the opposition are not invited. Is it their ancestral property? This is why Bengal's Constitution is under threat."
Earlier, parliamentary minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay said, "The current regime at the Centre has been undermining the constitutional provisions constantly by defying the federal system, by unleashing investigative agencies onopposition-governed states, andby not releasing funds rightfully claimed by the states for their welfare activities."
