Tamluk: Bengal BJP secretary Nabarun Nayak and his wife, Tanushree Nayak Roy, were arrested by Tamluk Police on Tuesday for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1.6 crore from a south Kolkata businessman, promising him a contract for supplying blankets in Assam.
Police arrested the Nayak couple after several rounds of questioning. Nabarun was earlier BJP's Tamluk president.
According to sources, in Aug 2024, the businessman learnt about a large blanket supply contract for a govt office in Kokrajhar, Assam. It was alleged that Nabarun, whom he contacted through a friend, demanded a hefty commission for securing the contract.
In the businessman's complaint, it was also alleged that Nabarun, his wife and their associates allegedly travelled to Kokrajhar via Guwahati at his expense and handed him work orders for supplying blankets worth Rs 39 crore and Rs 50 crore. The businessman, who paid Nabarun Rs 1.6 crore bribe to bag the contracts, later learned that these were fake.
Before his arrest, Nabarun said: "This case was filed to frame me. I was at a local protest site during the time mentioned in the complaint. The incident is alleged to have occurred in Guwahati, yet no case was filed there. Instead, a false case was filed in Tamluk under the guise of an Assam incident to tarnish my reputation. I will battle this legally."
Partha Sarathi Maity, vice president of Bengal Pradesh Trinamool Youth Congress, said: "Police are investigating the allegations. It appears to be a significant financial corruption."
