  • Underlining the secular identity of India, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said it is a matter of pride that the Constitution has completed 75 years of its journey since adoption on November 26, 1949.

Speaking to mediapersons after offering puja at a famous Kali temple in Naihati in North 24 Parganas district, the TMC chief said, “We are together, we are united. And we are secular, none can cause any fissure and division among us.” “It is a matter of pride that our Constitution completes 75 years of its journey since adoption and I congratulate all fellow patriotic Indians,” she added.

The CM also posted on X: “On this Constitution Day, we affirm again that we are proud of our Constitution.”

“The fundamentals of our Constitution ensure liberty, equality, justice, fraternity, democracy, and secularism. We abide by these values and I congratulate all my countrymen for upholding these values,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, a resolution in the state Assembly to commemorate the Constitution Day was contested by the opposition BJP, claiming that political statements have been made in it targeting the central government.

Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay moved the resolution to mark the completion of 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution of India.

Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, speaking in the discussion on the resolution in the House, said the resolution cannot be supported.

He claimed that the BJP-led government at the Centre has been targeted and political averments made in the resolution “which should have been apolitical for unanimous vote”, and said these were not acceptable.
