  • The brewing cyclone in the Bay of Bengal has indirectly impacted the onset of winter in West Bengal. While the state is unlikely to experience direct effects, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain over the weekend in four coastal districts: East and West Midnapore, and North and South 24 Parganas.

Light rain is expected in East and West Midnapore while the North and South 24 Parganas districts will receive rain on the weekend.

The coastal districts of West Bengal may experience a slight rise in temperature due to the influence of the cyclone. However, the western districts are expected to maintain their wintery climate. Fog is likely in several districts, including Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, and Malda.

Kolkata’s minimum temperature was recorded at 17 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The city is expected to see a gradual increase in temperature over the next few days, with night temperatures potentially reaching 20 degrees Celsius by the end of November.

“Chances of a further drop in temperature are low for now,” said a weather official.

“The depression over the Bay of Bengal has become very deep over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The distance of the cyclonic formation from the land of Bengal is long so it can be said that there is no effect,” said another official.

Likely to intensify into a cyclone, the deep depression is currently located 640 km south and southeast of Pondicherry and 720 km south and southeast of the Chennai coast. For now, avoiding the Sri Lankan coast, it is heading towards the Tamil Nadu coast.
