Kolkata: Trinamool's Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir issued an unconditional apology on Friday in response to a show-cause notice, days after a revolt on TV channels. Kabir submitted a three-page letter containing his response to parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in the assembly.
Sources said the MLA stated that he had not wished to embarrass the party or hurt anyone. He, however, admitted that he spoke emotionally after the party did not take action despite certain complaintshe had made. Kabir explained in the letter why he felt compelled to make those statements, a TMC source said.
The MLA, however, didn't show any signs of softening his stance as he spoke to reporters outside the assembly after submitting the letter. He questioned why MP Kalyan Banerjee should not be show-caused and face the disciplinary committee despite attacking the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad president.
"I have submitted a three-page response to a one-page show-cause notice. I guess I was show-caused and had to face the disciplinary committee since I am an MLA from the rural belt. But the same doesn't apply to politicians who stay in the Bhowanipore area. I guess common people will judge this one day," he said.
He stressed that despite his differences, he would not be leaving the party. "I guess rural netas often go neglected even within the party. But I will stay in TMC and will continue to make my demands before the party chief and the number 2 leadership," said Kabir.
On Thursday, the MLA met CM Mamata Banerjee in the assembly, after which he said she had asked him to respond to the show-cause notice promptly.
After receiving Kabir's response, Chattopadhyay said he would soon call a disciplinary committee meeting, which would decide on the next course of action.
