  • To enhance road safety and prioritise passenger security, the transport department has drafted a standard operating procedure (SOP) for bus operators. The SOP is aimed at sensitising all stakeholders, including passengers, drivers, conductors, pedestrians and vehicle owners/operators, about road safety measures, officials said on Wednesday.

To achieve this, the transport department will collaborate with police authorities, bus operators, worker unions, associations, and civil society members. Key initiatives include verifying the antecedents and credentials of drivers and conductors, implementing strict safety protocols and promoting awareness campaigns to educate both passengers and operators about traffic rules and regulations.

“To enhance safety and efficiency, all bus drivers must download the official monitoring app and scan their bus’s unique QR code before each journey. This enables real-time tracking of location and route adherence, ensuring compliance with speed limits and operational timings. Any deviations will trigger alerts to the driver and authorities. Drivers are obligated to strictly follow traffic rules and regulations, cooperate with law enforcement, and maintain a positive working environment. They must treat all passengers with respect, regardless of background or ability, and provide assistance to vulnerable groups,” said an official.

Bus operators have been asked to adhere to scheduled routes and timings, with minimal delays to ensure reliable service.

In a significant move towards modernising public transportation, the West Bengal government has launched a digital bus ticketing service through the Yatri Sathi app. Initially available on 12 routes connecting the airport, this service will soon be expanded to cover the entire West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) network in Kolkata.

This feature allows commuters to book bus tickets directly from their smartphones, eliminating the need for cash transactions and reducing crowding at bus stops. By embracing digital payments, the government aims to promote a cashless economy and simplify the overall commuting experience.

Transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, “The introduction of digital ticketing through Yatri Sathi is a game-changer for public transport in Kolkata. It reflects our commitment to leveraging technology to improve accessibility, simplify travel, and enhance the overall commuter experience.”

Dr. Saumitra Mohan, secretary of the department of transport, said, “This collaboration with Yatri Sathi marks a pivotal step in Kolkata’s journey toward becoming a truly smart city….”

Beyond bus ticketing, Yatri Sathi offers a range of services, including direct-to-driver cab rides, real-time bus tracking, and journey planning. The app’s vision is to become a one-stop solution for all transportation needs in West Bengal, including cities like Siliguri, Durgapur, and Asansol.

The West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) is the primary public operator responsible for managing bus and ferry services in West Bengal. By adopting digital ticketing, WBTC aims to enhance the overall public transportation experience and contribute to the state’s sustainable development goals.
