• JU boarders’ plaint against ‘outsider’

  • 123 Kolkata: Boarders of Block B of Jadavpur University's Main Hostel have written a letter to the interim VC, Bhaskar Gupta, complaining about the drunken behaviour of a non-boarder who creates trouble in the hostel and spoils the environment. They also alleged that some boarders encourage him to stay at the hostel illegally and support his behaviour. Students said that the "non-boarder" passed out a few years ago from JU.

Gupta acknowledged receiving the letter. "We are taking suitable actions," he said.

The dean of students, Rajat Roy, said, "I recommended administrative actions against him a few days ago. On Saturday, I went to the hostel to make sure that he leaves the hostel. In the evening, it was decided that the university will lodge a police plaint against him and thereafter, he will be thrown out by the security." However, students said he was in the Main Hostel on Saturday evening, too.

The PG students said they were feeling "unsafe" and "scared" at the hostel as the "non-boarder" goes "out of control" when drunk. "He is much senior to us and passed out of JU a few years ago but is still staying at the hostel illegally. He drinks alcohol and also takes ‘restricted substances'. Some boarders accompany him and encourage his behaviour," said a B Block boarder.
