  • Kolkata: A fire that possibly started from welding work on a roadside hoarding gutted a first-floor godown and severely damaged a store on the ground floor next to Mullickghat flower market on the approach to Howrah bridge on Sunday morning. None were injured.

The flames were first seen around 12.45 pm at the godown storing multiple dry food items.

Traffic on the approach to the bridge was suspended for some time before diversions were put in place by barricading a portion of the road.

Five fire tenders rushed to the spot, and the firemen brought the fire under control by 1.30 pm, following which traffic was restored.

Popularly known as Chirepatti, this market, next to the Mullickghat flower market, remains closed on Sundays. Cops said this reduced the extent of damage and minimised chances of injuries.

Paran Saha, the godown and shop owner, said his establishment was closed on Sunday. By the time he reached the shop, it was completely gutted.
