• KMC nod on way, subway to ease Chingrighata bottlenecks

  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police's proposal to ensure only motorised vehicles use the busy Chingrighata crossing, with cycles and pedestrians taking either subways or overbridges, is set to come true.

While the foot overbridge at Chingrighata has been functional for several years, the bottlenecks around the long-proposed underpass are set to go with the intervention of KP commissioner Manoj Verma. Replying to joint CP (traffic) Rupesh Kumar's request to begin construction of the underpass, RVNL officials at the district road safety committee meeting said the drawing for the project is ready and has received the KMDA nod. However, they claimed it is still awaiting approval from KMC.

Verma then requested KMC to approve the drawing at the earliest possible date as it involves safety of pedestrians. On Tuesday, cops said that KMC officials have given their in-principle go-ahead.

The proposed underpass will come up on Sukantanagar on one side and will have two openings at the other end — near Jalvayu Vihar and near a KMC drainage facility on Canal South Road. It will have a separate bay for cycles and pedestrians will have to go down just a few steps to use the underpass.
