“I was in love with the hospitality of the country. Despite being an Indian, I always felt at home there. It has never been a disappointing trip. But this time was different. It has left scars on my soul,” Ghosh told The Indian Express. “I filed a complaint at Dhaka Shyampur police station, but everyone advised me to leave the country instead of taking any action.”
He is all set to file a formal complaint with the Bangladesh Embassy, with purported photographs of those who had attacked him and his friends, and who had allegedly snatched his mobile phone as well.
Ghosh claimed that the incident occurred when he “revealed” his Hindu identity to local people on his last visit. He was allegedly subjected to physical assault, threats, and intimidation.
“If Bangladesh doesn’t get stable, or unrest continues, I will not visit the country,” he said.
Ghosh’s experience comes amidst growing concerns over the safety of Indian tourists in Bangladesh, particularly in light of recent incidents of alleged religious intolerance and violence.
Sukanta Ghosh, Sayan Ghosh’s father, expressed relief over his son’s safe return. He voiced disappointment with the Embassy’s response to Sayan’s distress call.
“I am happy that he returned safely. When he was attacked, he sought help from the Embassy which didn’t help him. Instead, they kept questioning him over why he was there. He had a tourist visa… if it is so troublesome, they shouldn’t give tourist visas now. I was aware of all that he went through… as his father, I was just praying he must return safely.”
Ghosh, a resident of the Deshpriya Nagar area in Belghoria, returned from Bangladesh on November 26. after a harrowing experience. He had gone to Bangladesh on November 23rd with a friend for shopping. “The (local people) asked us who we were and that we didn’t look like local people,” Ghosh said. “When I told him that I am from India. They asked me about my religion and as soon as they heard I was Hindu they attacked me with a knife. They took my wallet and snatched my phone too… I will never visit Bangladesh again.”
