Kolkata: The decomposed body of a woman was found around 20 metres from the railway tracks between Brace Bridge and Majerhat railway station on Tuesday evening. The head was found near the body.
Police have not ruled out both options: one, the victim being run over by a local train, and two, the woman being murdered and dumped at this desolate place. A post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday to ascertain the exact cause of death. "Necessary investigation is going on," said Joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar.
According to police, a few local residents discovered the body in a sari while walking along the tracks. There were cut marks on her neck, and the skin was peeling off the bones. It was evident that the body was several days old. The police were then informed.
A team of officers from Behala division and the homicide section of Lalbazar rushed to the spot to oversee the investigations. Sources said they are investigating all angles and that sniffer dogs have been pressed into service. All nearby police stations, including those in Diamond Harbour police district, have been alerted to know if any woman fitting the description of the victim went missing in the past 96 hours.
