  • 123 Kolkata: Locals of Dakshindari in Lake Town demonstrated with the body of a class IX student for six hours and refused to allow the police to take the body for a post-mortem examination after she was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room on Tuesday.

Although no suicide note was found, the locals, along with the girl's mother, claimed she killed herself in humiliation after her father was arrested on charges of molesting a next-door neighbour, a 15-year-old girl, during Kali Puja and has been in jail since then. The family claimed the man was booked on a false charge as the two families had disputes. The police, however, denied the claim and said since the man was booked under the Pocso Act, getting bail was difficult anyway.

"My husband is in jail for a month. We hoped he would be granted bail on Monday, but it didn't happen. My daughter was devastated and couldn't accept the humiliation as she was being taunted by her friends and some locals. I believe this is the reason she ended her life," her mother said.

She added that the 15-year-old girl was setting off firecrackers inside their building floor when her husband rebuked her.

"He never molested her. We demand justice for my daughter and action against the woman who filed the false complaint," she said.

Senior police officers, including the DCP and ACP North of Bidhannagar, as well as the local councillor and MLA Sujit Bose, arrived at the scene on Tuesday.

The situation was brought under control around 6 pm. The police then retrieved the body and sent it for autopsy.
