  • Kolkata: Calcutta University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata on Tuesday. These two esteemed institutions will work together for research and development and academic exchange programmes.

The interim vice-chancellor, Santa Datta, said, "The relationship between the two esteemed institutions will benefit our students and open avenues for research collaboration that can benefit both institutions. Remarkably, the Regional Meteorological Centre has completed its 150 years."

Three departments—atmospheric science, environmental science, and the radio physics department—will work with the regional Met department. These three departments are facing an extreme teacher crunch. Atmospheric science has three vacant posts out of four, environmental science has three teachers out of five posts, and the radio physics department has 22 teachers out of 42 sanctioned posts.

Somnath Dutta, director of the meteorological department, said, "This collaboration will help generate new ideas and open avenues for research and development for the future. I am sure that both institutes will greatly benefit from this bond." Indigenous Stratosphere Troposphere (ST) radar which was installed in Haringhata two years ago, will be used in the collaboration purpose to collect raw data for the research purpose.
