Kolkata: Over 100 teachers of IIT-Kharagpur took out a silent march inside the campus premise at 5.30 pm protesting against the disciplinary actions initiated against the office bearers of the IIT Teachers' Association (IITTA) and show cause notices issued against 86 professors. They also demanded a healthy academic environment where intimidation would not prevail.
The march started from Bidhan Chowk and covered prominent spots such as the gymkhana, hospital, technology guest house, tikka and ended again at Bidhan Chowk.
"We will continue wearing black badges as a mark of protest. We will hold silent street protests with placards on Thursday. Our protest will continue till the show cause notices of 86 professors are withdrawn and disciplinary actions against the office bearers are stopped," said a professor.
IIT-Kgp authorities met the association office bearers on Monday and extended the time-period till Dec 13 to reply to the show cause notice that were served to the office bearers on Nov 12 for writing to the Union education minister alleging nepotism, arbitrary faculty and staff recruitment and other irregularities at the institute.
The institute initiated disciplinary actions for failure to provide reply to the show cause on Nov 21. The second show cause was served to 86 professors who signed the IITTA letter demanding withdrawal of the show cause notices and disciplinary proceedings against the office bearers.
