Kolkata: Guard rails have been placed at every entry point, with no fewer than 30 cops at the venue under the leadership of an ACP and two inspectors, and another 200 to cover any rally in the vicinity of the current high-security zone in the Karaya-Beniapukur area — near the Bangladesh deputy high commissioner's office — on Wednesday. Lalbazar said "a larger and adequate arrangement has been made for the Esplanade protests on Thursday."
Besides the planned deployment, police in plain clothes will also be stationed around the office 24 hours a day for the time being. After the protest last Thursday left one cop injured, police units have been instructed to ensure that no protester, especially those engaging in flash protests, could breach the security cordon. The Special Branch has been asked to gather intelligence in this regard.
The area, frequented by Bangladeshis, has also come under the cop scanner. According to Lalbazar, the purpose is to ensure that "nothing can challenge peace here and that the diplomats' security here is not taken for granted".
A police officer said that around 15-20 extra personnel were deployed in the vicinity of the Bangladesh deputy hiigh commissioner's residence. Besides the battalions, local police and Special Branch members were directed to ensure that no form of protest or celebration was staged in the vicinity. "We have also deployed men in plain clothes in areas like New Market, Park Street, and Mukundapur to ensure peace," the officer added.
