123 Kolkata: Three weeks after CM Mamata Banerjee spoke on overhauling Bengal CID, state govt on Wednesday ordered the transfer of CID chief R Rajasekharan as ADG (Training). Rajasekharan, a 1997 batch IPS officer, had been ADG CID since May 2022. Vishal Garg, ADG CID-II, will now lead the unit temporarily. Kolkata Police's investigating chief Muralidhar Sharma was also recently transferred.
ADG (Training) Damayanti Sen will now be ADG (Policy). R Shivkumar, who used to hold Sen's portfolio, has been given the responsibility of ADG (EB). Rajeev Mishra, who had been ADG (EB) position, will now be ADG Modernisation. The EB has been tasked with stopping staple vegetables like potatoes from crossing the border. Barely 48 hours ahead of the transfer of the top IPS officers, home department had transferred 57 deputy SPs at one go. Officers from Basirhat and Jhargram were posted in the CID. A number of officers have been posted in the newly formed cyber wing.
CM Mamata Banerjee on Nov 21 had signalled an all-out attack on corruption and had held a section of lower-level police and govt officials responsible for allowing irregularities.
She had hinted at a complete overhaul of CID and asked specialised police units like the STF and the ACB to "drag anyone by the collar" if evidence is found against them.
