Rajasekaran has been made ADG (IGP Training), a much less important position in the police administration.
The government, however, is yet to name the successor of Rajasekaran who was appointed as the Additional Director-General (ADG) and IGP of West Bengal CID in May 2022.
Sources in the Home Department said that the name of his successor would become clear in a couple of days. The government, meanwhile, named R Sivakumar as ADG and IGP of the Enforcement Branch (EB) in place of Rajeev Mishra. Mishra, on the other hand, has been made ADG & IGP (Modernisation and Coordination).
Damayanti Sen, who was ADG Training, has been made ADG & IGP, Policy.
The removal of Rajasekaran comes days after the chief minister came down heavily on the state police, especially the functioning of the CID.
After chairing a meeting of top officials of her government on November 21, the CM said that stern action should be taken against those involved in corrupt practices “irrespective of their political colour”. “I will completely reshuffle the CID, strengthen the STF (Special Task Force) and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB),” she added.
She had also directed Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar to look into the complaints received against some officers and take action in case those were found to be genuine. “If there are complaints (against police officers or political persons), verify it.
“That day it was decided that Rajasekaran, who is known to be very close to TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, will be transferred. We will see more transfers of top police officers in the days ahead,” an official of the state Home Department said.
