12 Behrampore: Two police officers were injured during a non-lethal training exercise in Raghunathganj in Jangipur police district on Thursday when a hand grenade exploded.
The session, which involved roughly 150 police personnel, was being held at the superintendent of police office grounds. The purpose was to train officers in hand-grenade usage for riot control operations.
ASI Abu Bakkar sustained chest injuries when a grenade detonated prematurely after he removed its pin during his practice turn. Constable Tapu Roy, standing nearby, received injuries to his hand. The session was halted immediately and fellow officers took the duo to Jangipur Super Specialty Hospital. While Roy was released following treatment, Bakkar was in serious condition. He was moved to a private healthcare facility in Durgapur for specialised treatment.
Jangipur police district SP Ananda Roy said both officers were under medical care and their conditions had become stable.
Police have launched an inquiry into the explosion.
