• Min temp in Kolkata drops to 16.7°C, lowest this season so far

  • 12 Kolkata: The city shivered in an early morning chill as the mercury dropped to 16.7°C on Friday, the lowest of the season so far. It could drop further by a degree on Saturday, predicted the Met office. According to the Met office, chilly northwesterly winds have picked up pace, leading to the chill.

However, a change in wind pattern could break the cold spell on Sunday. "Since a western disturbance is forming across north India, the northwesterly winds will be obstructed by clouds. We expect light rain in the western districts of Purulia and Bankura since the system will affect Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Consequently, the temperature will rise in Kolkata and could slide up to hover around 17°C-18°C," said Regional Meteorological Centre weather scientist H R Biswas.

He added that once the western disturbance recedes, the northwesterly winds — which blow from the snow-capped mountains in the northwest Himalayas and carry the chill across the north Indian plains — could revive by the middle of next week, leading to drop in mercury levels again.

This is the second chilly spell of the season. In Nov last week, the mercury had dropped significantly for the first time this season.
