  • Kolkata: Commute from Thakurpukur to Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute — known as Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital — is set to get easier. This will bring relief not just to hundreds of cancer patients and their kin but also to thousands of residents of Haridevpur, Kabardanga, Thakurpukur and Joka.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation's roads department has completed the widening of the ever-busy M G Road — a distance of 815 metres and covering an area of 1,100 square metres — starting near James Long Sarani and ending near Charial Canal, barely metres from the cancer hospital. The KMC spent Rs 4.8 crore on this project, with the work spanning around 20 months.

"The width of the road increased substantially from 7 metres to 14 metres. On certain stretches, the road is now 16 metres in width," said an officer of Thakurpukur Traffic Guard, adding that the average time of traffic has already reduced by three to five minutes.

The second portion of the expansion is now being taken up, stretching from the hospital to Kabardanga. "But, there is a roadblock here despite the DPR being ready. The KEIP is yet to put in place a drainage system on both sides of the road," said a source.
