  • 123 Kolkata: A 38-year-old woman, a bank staffer, was found dead in an Alipore guest house located on Raja Santosh Road under Chetla police station on Saturday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Sumana Parui Mondal, was a resident of Prantik Pally in Kasba and worked with a nationalised bank. Her husband works in the IT sector. The couple has an 11-year-old daughter.

The female guest was found unconscious in the third floor room of the guest house around 11.05 am on Saturday. "Two poison bottles were found beside the victim and the door was closed from inside. The victim was taken to SSKM Hospital. No foul play has been detected," said Joint CP (Crime) Rupesh Kumar.

Cops said the post-mortem would ascertain the cause and time of death, though suicide seems the most probable reason. Cops have not recovered any suicide note or received any complaint.

According to police sources, Mondal was "missing" from her residence since Friday and her family had lodged a missing case. According to the guest house officials, the woman had arrived around 11 am on Friday and booked the room for a day. She was allotted room number 301 where she was last seen by a water who had served water. She did not order any food, nor did she come out of her room.

"When she did not show up at the time for check out on Saturday, we sent a message to her phone that went unanswered. We then knocked on the door but received no response. That is when we decided to inform the police. Cops found her lying unconscious on the bed," said a guest house official.

Cops have collected CCTV footage of the guest house and her residence and are speaking to her colleagues. They will also speak to her family members. Inquest proceedings have been initiated.
