Kolkata: Preliminary post-mortem report of the 18-year-old tribal girl, whose body was found floating in a pond with her hands and legs tied, her mouth gagged with a cloth and a brick tied to her waist in Sandeshkhali on Saturday morning revealed that the girl was strangled to death.
"The primary post-mortem report indicates signs of murder. There are marks of strangulation on her neck, suggesting she was killed by strangling with a rope before being dumped into the pond. According to the post-mortem report, the woman died at least 48 hours before her body was discovered. However, the preliminary report does not confirm whether she was raped. To verify the allegations of rape, samples from her private parts have been collected and sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory," a police officer said.
The victim's aunt said, "Our daughter was abducted from the pondside in Ghoshpur, after which she was raped and murdered. Then, the accused threw her into the pond. We demand justice for our daughter's murder. We want safety for our daughters."
"We have seen what happened in Sandeshkhali earlier only a few months ago over issues of land grabbing and atrocities on women. When politics gets involved, the focus shifts away from the real issue. That is why we don't want politics to interfere in my daughter's murder," the girl's mother said.
Basirhat SP Hossain Mehedi Rehman told TOI that police were trying to trace a motorcyclist after a local woman reported seeing the teenager riding pillion on the day she went missing.
Members of the National Commission for Women visited the area on Sunday.
