• Five-time Everester passes away at 59 in Darjeeling

  • Darjeeling: Five-time Everest climber, Kushang Dorjee Sherpa (59), died at his residence in Darjeeling on Saturday. Apart from Mt Everest, Sherpa also scaled Mt Makalu and Mt Nanda Devi (East). The govt of India also awarded him the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2003.

    Sherpa climbed Mt Everest in 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2003. He is also the first Indian to climb Mt Everest from the treacherous Khangshung Face.

    According to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) officials, Sherpa was also an instructor at the HMI. "Sherpa joined the HMI as a chief instructor on June 1, 1999, and retired on Feb 26, 2016. In Dec 2020, he shared his experiences with 60 trainees undergoing the ‘Disaster Rescue Response Course' at HMI. Sherpa's legacy is not just in the mountains he conquered, but in the lives he touched," said HMI principal, group captain Jai Kishan.

    Sherpa is survived by his wife, Pinkey Sherpa, two daughters, Passang Lamu Sherpa and Lakpa Doma Sherpa, and three sons, Passang Tenzing Sherpa, Passang Temba Sherpa, and Narbu Sherpa.
