• NDITA takes underground route to keep Salt Lake Bypass stretch lit

  • 123 Kolkata: The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) will set up an underground cable conduit on the 2.5 km long Salt Lake Bypass stretch from Chingrighata flyover approach road to J.K. Saha bridge to ensure uninterrupted street lighting along the stretch.

Officials said that at present the main electric line moves on a narrow pipeline just below the poles along the Salt Lake Bypass stretch connecting EM Bypass with Sector V. The line often gets damaged due to the ongoing metro work as the street lights on the stretch get affected.

"The main electric line is at a very low depth, passing just below the poles. There is no conduit as the lines pass through small pipes. Due to metro work, the electric line often gets damaged. A cable conduit will be laid through which the electric line will pass," said an NDITA official.

There are close to 100 street light poles on Salt Lake Bypass, with about 30 metres of gap between two poles. NDITA has initiated the process to engage an agency for the work. The project cost is estimated at Rs 55.6 lakh, and work is to be completed within two months from the date of commencement. The footpath on the sides of the stretch will also be restored after laying the underground duct.

Previously, a few stretches of Sector V, which were dug up for different utility work, were repaired and restored by NDITA authorities. "The damaged stretches are restored whenever it is required," officials said. The authorities also restored the damaged drainage network lines due to metro construction work at several spots on Salt Lake Bypass. NDITA had earlier worked on setting up underground duct to remove all overhead cables across Sector V, with only a few stretches left to be covered.

The Salt Lake Bypass stretch will get a new look next year, with authorities setting up the Sector V iconic gate near Wipro crossing to welcome visitors to the IT hub. Also, work on the proposed EM Bypass to New Town flyover, which is to move over the Salt Lake Bypass stretch, is also expected to start next year.

NDITA is also working on plans to develop the stretch from Wipro crossing to College More into a smart street with cycle lanes, street furniture, smart bus stands, water ATMs, public art, CCTV surveillance, decorative illumination, and signage.
