  • Kolkata: The CBI, probing the rape and murder of the 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Hospital, is scanning 900 hours of CCTV footage it collected from the hospital. The agency intends to use this footage as a tool to prove tampering of evidence.

On Monday, the lawyer CBI informed the Sealdah ACJM court that footage from CCTV cameras for eight days was being examined but did not disclose the specific locations from where it was collected. Five DVRs and five hard disks were sent to CFSL Kolkata for further extraction of data. The analysis of the footage is time-consuming, the court was told.

Meanwhile, the district court hearing the rape and murder charges against Sanjay Roy completed the examination of 27 witnesses. Present at the court, former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh's lawyer, Zohaib Rouf, said that 86 days have passed and the agency was yet to find evidence against him. He raised questions about the CBI's prolonged examination of the footage.

While both Ghosh and former Tallah police station officer in charge Abhijit Mandal applied for bail, the court rejected their pleas after it found both of them to be influential. The court observed that if released on bail, they might try to tamper with the evidence yet to be collected as they are aware of "certain crucial facts and circumstances".
