123 Kolkata: Calcutta HC on Monday directed the state to arrest the person responsible for inflicting injuries on the body of a prisoner who died in hospital on Sept 2, 2023.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh gave two weeks to the state SIT to arrest the person and directed the state to submit a report on Dec 23.
The excise department had on Aug 23, 2023, arrested Gofur Molla (32), accused of selling illicit liquor. A South 24 Parganas court remanded him in judicial custody on Aug 29. He was taken to hospital after he fell ill on Sept 1, 2023 where he died the next day. His son later moved the HC, complaining that he was beaten to death while in custody.
Justice Ghosh after perusing the report submitted by the SIT on Monday said: "There are injury marks in the right elbow and the knees."
"I want the state to find out who touched the person," he observed.
