  • Kolkata: The membership drive of Bengal BJP has been extended to Dec 31 as the number of members registered is much lower than the target set by Union home minister Amit Shah. Bengal BJP minder Sunil Bansal on Monday took stock of the membership drive in a meeting in New Delhi.

According to sources, membership figures in the state have crossed 30 lakh, not even close to the halfway mark of the 1-crore-member target set by Shah. "Bansal Ji has advised us on some measures. The membership drive will continue till Dec 31," Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said on Monday. BJP sources pointed out that several districts in north Bengal, including Jalpaiguri, did not yield desired numbers.

Bansal, said sources, was not happy with the performance of some MLAs and MPs in attracting members in their constituencies. Bansal had hinted last month that outcome of the membership drive would directly influence ticket allocation for the 2026 assembly elections.
