• Jol Swapno: Didi’s tough stance against contractors
    Times of India | 10 December 2024
  • Kolkata: Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday instructed top state govt officials and ministers to take stringent action against anyone impeding the Jol Swapno project. She said 23 officials and 373 contractors have already been issued show-cause notices. The CM was upset with contractors who submitted the DPR without requisite soil testing, resulting in water supply disruptions despite pipeline installation. She also threatened to blacklist contractors violating prescribed norms, said sources.

Banerjee said contractors would be fined for substandard work. She commissioned a survey to verify water connections to 91 lakh households amid numerous complaints of water unavailability and instructed police to stop pipeline vandalism. Addressing rural infrastructure concerns, she restricted village road access to trucks transporting vegetables and fish, citing damage to the roads.

The CM directed officials to disregard local political interference and resolve pending issues within seven days. She said govt was acquiring land at prevailing market rates and urged farmers not to obstruct pipeline installation, assuring compensation for any damages.
