  • 123 Kolkata: The anti-rowdy section of DD raided a call centre in Ballygunge on Monday night and arrested 19 people for duping US citizens. Sources said attempts were also made to dupe German citizens from the centre. The fake call centre was being run from Mullen Street off Sarat Bose Road, said cops. They had taken the place on rent for Rs 2 lakh a month to "avoid nosy neighbours".

The arrests were made after Ballygunge police tipped off the detective department.

"Altogether, 19 persons were arrested for running an illegal call centre from a flat in Ballygunge area. Several mobile phones, laptops, routers and screenshots were seized from the spot," said Joint CP (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar.

According to investigators, the accused received calls from various locations and acted as team leaders to help in "closure of IT issues faced by US citizens." They posed as employees of an antivirus firm and other companies. In the guise of installing or updating software on the devices of citizens in the US or elsewhere, they used software like AnyDesk to take remote access of the victims' computers and laptops.
