Kolkata: The names of permanent vice-chancellors at four more state universities were announced on Tuesday following interactions at Raj Bhavan. The state higher education department issued notifications, naming the permanent VCs at Mahatma Gandhi, Kanyashree, Hindi and Murshidabad universities.
Sourangshu Mukhopadhyay was appointed as the permanent VC at Mahatma Gandhi University, Tapati Chakraborti at Kanyashree University, Jane Alam at Murshidabad University and Nandini Sahu at Hindi University. On Friday, the state had announced the names of VCs for six state universities, including Presidency, Kalyani and Burdwan.
A division bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Manmohan received information from attorney-general R. Venkataramani regarding the governor's approval of the 11 nominations. The selection committee, chaired by former CJI U U Lalit, suggested VC candidates for 34 state universities to CM Mamata Banerjee, who subsequently forwarded the recommendations to Raj Bhavan.
The attorney-general had earlier informed the SC that five appointments would receive clearance, of which four got the nod on Tuesday.
The next hearing is slated for Jan 4.
