  • Police probing the murder of an 18-year-old tribal girl, whose body was found in a pond in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, have said that their preliminary investigation found no sign of sexual assault.

“Preliminary report confirms homicide (murder) but not rape. However, we are interrogating people and an investigation is on,” a senior officer in the North 24 Parganas district police told The Indian Express.

On Saturday, the body of the woman, who had gone missing on December 4 evening, was found in a pond near her house with her hands and legs tied, her mouth gagged and a brick tied to her waist. The family alleged she was raped and killed.

Having confirmed murder, the police are also verifying sexual assault and rape allegations and suspect involvement of someone known to the woman. A police officer said they suspect that the tribal girl was killed and thrown into the water.

“A team of forensic experts collected crucial evidence and conducted a detailed examination. The entire process is being meticulously documented through videography to ensure transparency,” said another officer.

Meanwhile, taking suo motu cognizance of the case, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the West Bengal DGP to expedite the investigation and bring the culprits to justice.

The NCW has also received complaints about alleged police negligence and collusion with local anti-social elements.

The Commission has assured the woman’s family that they would take all necessary steps to ensure that the culprits are brought to book. “…A girl went missing four days ago. A complaint was lodged regarding this but the police didn’t take action. Yesterday, her body was found floating in a pond. Her hands and mouth were tied and it seemed that she had been gangraped. If such incidents continue to take place in the state and the police remain silent, how will the parents take their girls out? There is negligence in law and order. If the police continue to safeguard the criminals and get politically influenced, how will justice prevail?…NCW will take all the necessary action required in the case….,” Dr Archana Majumdar, a member of NCW said after meeting the family on Sunday.

The 18-year-old recently completed her high school education.
