  • Kolkata: The CID on Tuesday recovered 98 kg of cannabis from two sedans near Dhulagarh toll plaza and arrested one of the drivers.

    Acting on a tip-off, the CID team stopped a car at the toll plaza. When they noticed another car that had already crossed the toll stop, they chased it. They were able to catch up. Searching of the two cars led to the recovery of cannabis estimated to be worth Rs 15 lakh. It was being transported from Bhadrak, Odisha to Kolkata.

    When CID stopped a sedan to check at the Dhulagarh toll plaza, it was surprised that another sedan stopped a little ahead though it had not been asked to stop. Cops decided to search both the cars and it lead to the unearthing of drugs worth Rs 15 lakh.

    The drugs were to be delivered at rave parties in Kolkata this December were being transported from Bhadrak in Odisha. One of the drivers was arrested. The other escaped.

    "Acting on a tip-off, the Narcotics Cell of CID conducted a raid at Dhulagarh Toll Plaza under Sankrail Police Station on Tuesday evening and intercepted a sedan worth Rs 18 lakh and another worth Rs 9 lakh. During the search, four multi-coloured plastic sacks containing cannabis greenish colour flowering top were recovered. Its total weight was found to be 98 kg and was seized. "Vinod Kumar Chauhan (46) a resident of GT Road in Serampore who is currently residing at Nischinda was held. Another driver managed to flee," said Indra Chakravorty, DIG (Special).
