  • KOLKATA: A young man reportedly slipped and fell on the tracks at Esplanade Metro station around 4pm on Wednesday though Metro Railway claimed it was a suicide attempt. The incident disrupted the services for nearly half-an-hour.

Kolkata Police said Md Danish, a 26-year-old youth from Jaipur in Rajasthan, was seriously injured and was being treated at a govt hospital after he was allegedly pushed onto the Metro tracks by a co-passenger when a train was rolling in.

"Around 4.15 pm, Md Danish, a resident of Jaipur's Indrajyoti Nagar, met with an accident after falling on the tracks at Esplanade Metro station. He claimed he was pushed by another passenger. His legs were severely injured because he brushed against a moving Dum Dum-bound train on Platform No. 1. The injured was taken to SSKM Hospital. His family member was called and is currently with him at the hospital. A case was registered at the New Market PS," said Rupesh Kumar, joint CP (crime & traffic).

Police are checking CCTV footage of the platform. Cops said they were investigating if the incident happened because of crowding on the platform, for which the youth might have been thrown off his balance while a train was entering the station at top speed.

But Metro Railway maintained it was a suicide attempt. Rakesh Kumar, CPRO, Metro Railway, said, "According to information available, the passenger jumped in front of an Up (Dum Dum-bound) Metro at Esplanade. Power was blocked to rescue the passenger. Normal services resumed at 4.42 pm."

Ritayan Mukherjee, who had boarded the Dum Dum-bound train at Jatin Das Park, said, "The train stopped while entering the Esplanade station. Thirteen minutes later, it was announced there was a suicide attempt." Mukherjee was in the third coach, while only the first coach had touched the platform. The train was evacuated.
