123 Kolkata: St Xavier's University will introduce peace studies as a value-added course in this Jan session, VC Fr Felix Raj announced on Thursday. The university is now in talks with the state, seeking an additional 10 acres to introducing new courses, like LLM, designing, artificial intelligence and data science.
Students pursuing four-year UG programmes, who will enter the third semester in Jan, will have the opportunity to select peace studies as an add-on course. The VC said, "Students are free to take any optional course across the department, not just one department. So we are bringing in an interdisciplinary approach. Considering the scenario across the globe, these are examples for the students to look upon, and practical learning is more important to build up a sensible future generation."
The Mother Teresa Chair for Peace has been created by the state following an announcement by CM Mamata Banerjee at the 4th convocation of the university. The govt approved Rs 36 lakh per annum. The university appointed Zinia Mitra for the post.
The university will also start a 2-year LLM course from 2025-26 and is planning a BTech programme with a specialisation in AI and machine learning. Students will be admitted through West Bengal Joint Entrance.
Courses in design, both for UG and PG, in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, will likely start from 2027-28. The new academic building with 200 classrooms will be constructed on 0.3 acres. The law school with 1,000 students will be shifted to this new building, and the LLM course will commence here from July.
