• Elephants kill 3 women, injure another in Jaldapara

  • Jalpaiguri: Wild elephants killed three women and injured another at Chilapata in Jaldapara National Park on Thursday. The forest department had already issued warning about 23 elephants in the area.

    The incident occurred at Bania in the Chilapata range where 10 women entered the forest to collect firewood. Six women, who managed to escape the elephant attack, informed forest officials of the tragedy. Forest officials, along with kunki elephants, recovered the bodies and rescued the injured woman. The deceased were identified as Rekha Barman, Chandmoni Oraon and Sukarmoni Lohar, all from Dakshin Mendabari village. Nima Charowa has been admitted to Alipurduar District Hospital with serious injuries.

    "We regularly inform villagers about animal movements. On Wednesday, we warned everyone about the elephants in Chilapata. The women disregarded our alert and entered Bania beat, which is in the forest's core area," said Parveen Kaswan, DFO, Jaldapara Wildlife Division.
