123 Kolkata: Kolkata Police recovered the body of a male, in a semi-mutilated form, near a metro pillar at Thakurpukur on Wednesday night. The recovery from near IIM Joka and on an important road that acts as a link to multiple schools in Joka-Bakrahat led cops to launch a manhunt to establish his identity.
Police claimed passersby first noticed the sack containing a body near a metro pillar in Thakurpukur. Cops were informed, after which they recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. Investigators are examining whether the body was dumped there after a murder or if there is another reason.
"It was around 8 pm that the decomposed body of the male was found inside a heap of garbage on Ismail Sarani off Diamond Harbour Road opposite metro pillar P-8D. The body was sent to Vidyasagar State General Hospital. He might be a vagabond, but we have sent his photo to all nearby police stations. No apparent signs of injury were found, but we are awaiting the final postmortem report," said DC (southwest-Behala) Rahul De.
Locals claimed they noticed something in a sack near the pillar. "Initially, no one paid much attention, but later, body parts were seen protruding from the sack, causing a commotion. The news reached the Thakurpukur PS and the police rushed to the scene," said Manas Kundu, a local resident.
According to police, the victim was wearing a shirt and trousers. Investigators said the man had probably died two or three days ago. It is also unclear whether the young man was a local resident or from another area. The police are reviewing CCTV footage, going through missing people dossiers from the area, and speaking with witnesses.
