School dispersal, breakdown choke traffic in S Kol belt

12 Kolkata: A chain of events on Friday left a section of south Kolkata gridlocked and slowed traffic in the belt to a crawl. The effect, spread between Park Circus and Exide, was reported a little after 11.30 am and continued for nearly two hours. Among the reasons cited by traffic cops for the unusual snarls were early dispersal from two south Kolkata schools where students primarily travel by private car, a breakdown on Maa and a minor accident on AJC Bose flyover. All these coincided with peak office-time traffic. Lalbazar said such a jam, caused by school traffic, was reported after several months.
Kolkata Traffic Police took to social media to warn motorists to avoid multiple roads. "Due to dispersal from schools, the following roads are moving slow: Theatre Road, Sarat Bose Road, AJC Bose Road, and Amir Ali Avenue," the cops wrote. Among the other roads affected were PC Connector, Dargah Road, and Middleton Street, besides the AJC Bose flyover.
"Friday was the last day before winter vacation in a lot of schools. Vehicles were moving in circles around the schools after dropping off students instead of returning later, as there was early dispersal," said an officer.
"Students from Jadavpur reached home almost two hours after we started from their school in central Kolkata. We remained stuck on AJC Bose Road. Parents kept calling me for details," said Sanjay Das, a pool car operator.
This delay was noticed most on the Syed Amir Ali Avenue-Suhrawardy Road alignment, which has multiple schools.
