• Cops’ new social media policy against e-crime

  • Kolkata: In the backdrop of the Calcutta High Court pulling up state police regarding the manner in which cyber investigations are carried out, the Kolkata Police has begun reaching out to cybercrime victims where investigations are pending. The cops have also indicated a helpline number through which citizens can seek updates on the status of the investigations or share information about the cases.

"We have launched a new social media policy. We want to reach out to a maximum number of victims. Complainants have the right to know about the status of the complaint. We want to assure them that we are trying our best to go for recoveries. If there is an issue that is hampering the probe, we will share the same with the complainant," said an officer.

"The top brass wanted us to launch an intense campaign across crossings, markets, and other public spots. We distributed leaflets and posters in Bengali, English, and Hindi, at places where the population is most vulnerable. We are also holding announcement sessions to make people aware of the recent methods of fraud. But we also need to stand with people who have lost savings," an officer said.

Outreach programmes by Kolkata Police have started recently at multiple areas with contrasting demographics.
