  • 123 Kolkata: The water treatment plant, being built at Dhalai Bridge near Patuli, will start operating before 2026 summer, supplying treated drinking water to around 2.5 lakh people living in 10 KMC wards in the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt. The KMC has decided to invest Rs 700 crore for augmentation of water supply to Tollygunge-Jadavpur area and localities off EM Bypass.

The KMC's project, once completed, will have a capacity to produce 10 million gallons of water a day. Filtered at the plant, treated potable water will be supplied to homes in a large area, including Patuli, Baghajatin, Ramgarh, Gangulibagan, Naktala, Garia, Netajinagar, Bansdroni and Kudghat, where a large section still depends on groundwater.

Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday asked the KMC water supply department to expedite the construction of the water treatment plant so that residents of these "tube-well zones" did not have to face water crisis for long. "We have decided to invest a huge amount to spare residents of the tube-well zones water scarcity. While the construction is expected to end in another year, the water supply department has been engaged in laying pipelines across 10 wards that will link the plant at Dhalai Bridge," said Hakim.

According to a KMC water supply department official, the civic body took up a project to build multiple water booster pumping stations to ensure the benefits of the water treatment plant reach the residents of the 10 wards. A civic official said KMC would spend Rs 200 crore on the construction of 18 capsule booster pumping stations in the next two years to supply potable water from Dhalai Bridge and Dhapa water treatment plants to vast parts in Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt and neighbourhoods located off EM Bypass.

Hakim said the KMC would go all the way to root out water crisis for good. "We have decided to spend Rs 700 crore in phases to improve the infrastructure of the city's water supply system. Our motto is to supply pure drinking water to residents in the crisis zones who still depend on groundwater," he said.
