  • 123 Asansol: The National Lok Adalat in Durgapur ordered National Insurance Company to pay compensation of Rs 2.5 crore to the family of a person killed in ab accident in 2012. The compensation must be paid within a month, failing which interest at 6% will be charged.

The order came on Dec 14 when a National Lok Adalat was held across the country to resolve various long-pending cases. Ashish Kumar Baral, a resident of Durgapur, was killed in a road accident on NH-55 in the Balimi PS area of Dhenkanal, Odisha, on Jan 17, 2012. He was a project manager at Bhushan Steel.

On the day of the incident, he was returning from company work in a company vehicle when the accident occurred. His family filed a compensation claim against the insurance of the offending vehicle. "Due to delays in the case and the acquisition of Bhushan Steel by Tata Steel, many important documents could not be traced. We gathered all the necessary documents, but Ashish's father passed away due to age-related issues before the case was resolved," said Ayub Ansari, the family's lawyer.

The representatives of National Insurance Company in Durgapur appealed to the court, considering the family's situation.
