123 Kolkata: Three members of a family in Narendrapur died in a suicide pact following alleged financial fraud, police said on Saturday.
Dipak Roy, his wife Jolly and their daughter Dishani were found unconscious in Laskarpur home on Thursday after consuming sleeping pills. While Jolly Roy was pronounced dead at the hospital, Dipak and Dishani succumbed during treatment.
The bodies of the deceased will be sent for autopsy on Sunday. Jolly's brother, Joy Narayan Roy, arrived in Kolkata from Raiganj. A suicide note pointed to financial fraud as the primary reason behind the step, said cops. They have launched a probe focusing on one Debabrata Sarkar, who allegedly facilitated illegal transactions, said an officer. Roy, a former medical representative, was struggling financially after losing job.
His attempt to run a grocery store proved insufficient to support the family, said cops.
According to local sources, the family was residing at Roy's in-laws' house in Laskarpur. Neighbours said that the family was under severe mental distress due to mounting financial pressure.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the role of individuals named in the suicide note.
