Sewer line job to hit Central Kol traffic for three weeks

123 Kolkata: If you are commuting from north Kolkata towards Dalhousie or Howrah, leave a bit early as ‘need-based' traffic diversions — to be in place for the next three weeks starting Tuesday — may increase the travel time. The Kolkata Traffic Police is likely to divert traffic on BB Ganguly Street, between CR Avenue and Lalbazar, due to repair of brick sewer line close to Phears Lane.
The dilapidated brick sewer portion, running under the tram track surrounding premises number 33 on BB Ganguly Street in ward number 44 under Borough V, will be repaired by the KMC.
The diversions, which would remain in place till completion of the work, would be need-based, said cops.
Traffic is likely to slow down on BB Ganguly Street, even between Sealdah and Bowbazar, due to Metro work on specific stretches on the road. "We faced a major problem when we stopped several rallies on BB Ganguly Street during the RG Kar protests. We found water accumulating due to the seepage that hindered normal life and traffic. We have been sending reminders to the KMC to complete the repairs here since last Sept," said an officer at Lalbazar.
Depending on the traffic load pressure, vehicles moving along Central Avenue (north to south) to avail BB Ganguly Street will be diverted further south from the crossing of BB Ganguly Street/CR Avenue to Dorina Crossing – RR Avenue – Netaji Statue – Old Court House Street – BBD Bag (South) or to GC Avenue – Mango Lane – BBD Bag (South) from the crossing of CR Avenue and GC Avenue."Vehicular traffic will also be diverted through arterial roads as and when required," said DC (Traffic) Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao.
