Palta water plant repair over, supply resumes in Kolkata today

12 Kolkata: The repair and maintenance work of the century-old Palta water treatment plant was completed on Monday afternoon, a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official said. The plant is ready to supply potable water from 6am on Tuesday, catering to the water needs of about 65% of the city's population.
"We successfully conducted the repair and maintenance work that began early in the morning. Now we are ready to treat raw water that will be collected from the Hooghly, and the treated water will be sent to the Tallah water reservoir. Finally, the Tallah water tank will supply water from 6am tomorrow (Tuesday)," said the KMC water supply department official.
Water supply was disrupted from the Tallah water tank on Monday (after 9am) to the entire north and central Kolkata areas and large parts of south Kolkata. "We took up the installation and repair of higher diameter valves, electro-mechanical drives, high tension pumps, leakage repairing work on higher diameter pipelines, and various other maintenance works at the Palta waterworks," said a civic official. Some major maintenance works were also undertaken at the Tallah pumping station.The official said that the workers were asked to wrap the work on time.
