  • 12 Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) will conduct piling of eucalyptus bullah (wood poles) to protect the banks of Rabindra Sarobar. The authorities on Monday received approval of Rs 1.7 crore from the state govt to conduct the work under the state's Green Cities Mission scheme.

KMDA officials said the banks of the water body has eroded at many places. "The bullah piling that was done at several stretches on the sides of the water body several years back got damaged. This is resulting in soil subsidence on the banks. A fresh bullah drive will be conducted at the affected stretches," said a KMDA official.

Prior to the work, KMDA has started surveying the lake to map out its bed along with the overall quality of the water body and its toxicity level. It is also trying to secure the data about the lake's the depth at various sections.

Water samples were collected for tests. Officials said for several years, only manual dredging was conducted on the sides of the lake, skipping the middle portion. This has led tosilt deposits.
