  • Kolkata: Calling construction on school playgrounds a ‘dangerous' trend, the Calcutta High Court on Monday directed police to halt the construction at the playground of a primary school in West Midnapore.

The District Primary School Council was directed to restore the playground to its original condition and the state was directed to report back, confirming the implementation of the court's order.

A parent had moved court, alleging there was construction underway at Manikpur Primary School in Daspur where the playground was made inaccessible to children because of it.

Advocates Firdaus Shamim and Gopa Biswas, representing the petitioner, argued that according to the Right to Education Act, every school must have a playground. The state lawyer informed the court that there were plans to relocate an Anganwadi centre there.

Justice Biswajit Basu questioned: "What is the connection between an Anganwadi centre and a primary school? Change your policy."

He further warned that the work should stop immediately and the playground be restored. — Subrata Chattoraj
