12 Kolkata: Political parties and social activists on Monday took to the streets in Kolkata to protest against attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. BJP and Congress seniors joined separate rallies on the day that also marks the Indian Army's victory over Pakistani forces during the Bangladesh liberation war.
BJP functionaries, including state joint general secretary Satish Dhond, general secretary Agnimitra Paul and former state chief Dilip Ghosh, attended a rally of a Hindu organisation at Rani Rashmani Road. "What is happening in Bangladesh against the minorities has sent shivers down the spine of everyone across the world. We are equally worried about the future of Hindus in Bengal. CM Mamata Banerjee's statements in the assembly are contrary to what Trinamool does. We have TMC netas who threaten minorities at Murshidabad with death. We have netas like Firhad Hakim who issue irresponsible statements," said Paul.
Congress held a rally from Fort William where they paid floral tributes at the ‘Vijay Smarak'. The rally ended at the Bangladesh deputy high commission after a stop at former PM Indira Gandhi's statue on Mayo Road. "Indira Gandhi was able to steer all kinds of support for Bangladesh. But netas now are failing in their efforts to forge diplomatic ties with the country. Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh are being attacked each day. BJP is unable to put pressure on govt in Bangladesh and stop such attacks," state Congress president Subhankar Sarkar said.
