Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee attended the Vijay Diwas celebrations at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club on Monday, with representatives from Bangladesh present, but refused to delve into the current political situation in the neighbouring country.
"I don't know the present situation and it wouldn't be proper for me to say anything on it as the matter depends on the govt of India and the Indian Army. I congratulate the Bangladesh Army and the Indian Army on this auspicious day," said Banerjee. "Some muktijodhas who participated in the 1971 war are also here. I can never forget the role of Bengal and India, nor the people who sacrificed their lives for the freedom movement of Bangladesh," she added.
The Army riders put on an equestrian show, followed by a Fly Past by combat helicopters. Latest military technologies were also on display during the annual event to mark the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Lt Gen RC Tiwari, the GOC-in-C of the Eastern Command, thanked the chief minister and the Bengal govt for cooperation and coordination in various fields.
