12 Jalpaiguri: Four members of a family, including two children aged seven and three, drowned when the car they were travelling in fell into a roadside pond in Cooch Behar on Sunday night.
The tragedy unfolded in the Kurar Paar area near Kaljani river. Sanjib Roy (39), while returning from a wedding ceremony in Tufanganj, lost control of his vehicle due to limited visibility in heavy fog, veered off course and plunged into the pond.
Sanjib was unable to open the doors and escape. The vehicle submerged with all occupants — his wife Bipasha (35), son Ivan (3) and daughter Isashree (7).
Villagers, alerted by the sound of the crash, discovered the sinking vehicle. A crowd gathered quickly, and after considerable effort, they managed to retrieve the car from the pond. A rescue team accessed the family by breaking the vehicle's windshield and windows.
The four were rushed to MJN Medical College and Hospital in Cooch Behar, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
Sanjib, a school teacher, resided in Baneswar, Cooch Behar. His wife was also a school teacher.
