  • 123 Kolkata: Chief secretary Manoj Pant held a high-level meeting at Nabanna on Monday with the Group of Ministers, along with DMs and other senior officials. He asked the DMs to be proactive in checking the work of contractors so the water supply project of Jal Jeevan Mission can be properly executed on time.

CM Mamata Banerjee had asked officials to penalise contractors who prepared faulty DPRs without soil tests, which resulted in taps remaining dry in many houses even after the laying of pipes.

The CM also wanted officials to verify through a survey if the pipelines actually reached the 90 lakh households in rural Bengal.

Bengal govt aims to provide water to 1.7 crore houses by 2025, and state govt is giving a major thrust to the potable water scheme. Every Monday, the scheme is being reviewed.

It has been spotted that at over 25,000 locations, there is damage to the pipes as people are using the potable water to drain their fields by damaging the water supply and diverting water lines. Moreover, some set up tanks at home and used them as they wished, without considering that cuts in the pipelines could cause major diseases to the population.

State govt has filed 2018 FIRs against those involved in the pilferage of drinking water.
